The Saplings Times
October 3rd, 2025
"As long as Autumn lasts, I shall not have hands, canvas, and colors enough to paint the beautiful things I see."
-Vincent Van Gogh
We made the most of Autumn this week by exploring the colors present in the fallen leaves on the trail, observed signs of Fall in our special sit spots, and investigated apple varieties. It was a beautiful and fun week!
Leaves
We started the week off by exploring fall leaf colors with a color swatch matching activity. After only a short trip down the logging road, we matched just about every color swatch that we had brought with us from light brown to vibrant reds and yellows. Coming up, we will learn about leaf shapes as well as the parts of a leaf and its functions.
Apples
We got our hands on some apples this week and dissected them to explore their seeds. We also did an apple taste test in which we tasted a variety of apples and voted on which was the favorite, charting the results. With 8 votes, the surprising winner was Granny Smith! The Saplings also learned a song about a year in the life of an apple tree. I bet there are some Saplings who would be happy to teach you the song!
